Alain Delon
Actually, a super star like Alain Delon visiting Egypt for the first time is really something! The morning after the opening ceremony, we had the chance to attend a press conference arranged for Alain Delon and ask him a couple of questions.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Hussein Fahmy whom we gave a copy of Teen Stuff. Then we went to the hall where the conference was to be held. We were the first to start asking questions, then the rest of the media people followed. Here are the questions of the press conference; the first two are ours.
What does the Cairo Film Festival Achievement Award mean to you and what is the prize that you still wish for?
As this award is strongly linked to my career which I am proud of because I have been acting for forty years, this award is a crown to my career and to the people with whom I've been working.
You're not older than Omar Al Sharif or Anthony Quinn, so why are you retiring even though you are a remarkable actor?
The decision to retire is a personal right and that's my own choice; it's not a matter of age, it's a matter of decision.
What do you think of Arabic movies?
Actually, I didn't get the chance to watch Arabic movies because they are seldom shown in France. But I had the chance to watch Chahine's and some of Hussein Fahmy's movies.
What was the influence of the great Italian director Visconti on your career?
He influenced me forty years ago, but he wasn't the only influence. His influence on me is not more or less than that of Melville for example. There have been several stages in my career: the Viscontian stage, the Clement stage, the Melville stage and the Losey stage. They're all outstanding directors who greatly influenced my career, each in his own style.
How did you feel when you were on stage, meeting the Egyptian public for the first time?
My personal feelings are not as important as the ones I convey to the public, in this case the Egyptian public, which I believe I succeeded in doing on the opening night. The public greeted me fabulously in a very touching manner. What is important is that there is a complete understanding between myself and the public. In Tunisia, I've experienced this popularity, but I didn't know that it was shared by the Egyptian public. So I wonder why you waited 23 years to invite me!
Why weren't you influenced by the American cinema although you worked in American productions? And why didn't you base your acting career in America?
I cannot base my judgement on my American experience since it was a short one. On the other hand, I'm French, Latin and European. They told me to stay in America and become the biggest star in the world, but my choice wasn't a choice of career, it was a choice of life. This is where I wanted to live my life.
